NEW!!! The classic 1715 fleet cob!
This one has been in the works for a long time. A nearly identical cob to the most popular design from the most famous wrecks in the world, the "1715 fleet", which wrecked off the eastern florida coast during a hurricane in 1715. My version just has one very minor change to it, which serves as a makers mark as well as then not having to strike these hyper-realistic cobs with "copy".
The shield side of the cob has the classic Lions and Castles which represent Castillo and Leon, provinces in Spain. Around the edge (when visible) is the latin: Hispaniarum Et Indiarum Rex, which translates to: "King of Spain and the Indies".
The Shield side has symbols for many of its other smaller provinces on the inside. To the left you find "OMJ", which stands for Mexico, and the assayer, who oversaw the mint at the time, Jose Eustaquio de Leon. To the right is the demonination, "8" for 8 Reales. The latin around the edge (when visible) is: Philippus V Dei G 1715, which translates to: "Philip the 5th, by the grace of God."
Cobs from this wreck were greatly from the Mexico mint, and almost all of them were the oddly shaped "clipped" variety. So for this cob, clipped and antiqued is the standard and recommended style. As with the other cobs, you can still choose between roundish or clipped, 27 or 31 grams, natural or aged, as well as other options.
As always, they are handmade by me on the Maine coast from solid .999 Fine silver; melted, shaped, and struck in the "old way"!
As such, remember, each one will be quite different in regards to shape, cracks present, and how much of the die actually shows up on the silver. My average cobs show anywhere between 50-70% of the design, just like the originals.
